In the previous section we learned about the benefits of cinnamon, star anise and nutmeg. In today's post, I'll introduce you to three other popular winter herbs: cloves, cardamom and ginger.
Ginger
This spice is both bitter and spicy, stimulating the blood circulation and invigorating. Clinical studies have also shown that it can relieve nausea and vomiting, so it is used in cases of nausea in pregnancy and seasickness, but it can also help those with a sensitive stomach during a flight or long car journey. It also shows encouraging results in relieving migraine headaches.
When used as a natural aromatic oil, it has a pleasant soothing scent, strengthens the immune system in case of colds and inflammatory diseases, reduces fever and plays a role in killing influenza viruses.
In old age, it can also be used to treat arthritis, as it contains anti-inflammatory substances and inhibits the formation of inflammatory substances. It reduces pain and morning joint stiffness. Interesting fact: a mixture of magnolia and ginger rootstocks is used to make an antidepressant medicine.
Cardamom
Its use has a long history, even the ancient Romans used it to treat bloating and aid digestion. It regulates the production of stomach acid, and sucking a few grains will make your breath more pleasant, but beware: larger amounts can cause a burning sensation on the tongue. It is among the more expensive spices, third only to saffron and vanilla on the world market.
In India, it is the most commonly used spice and is considered a mood and desire enhancer. It can also be used to relieve chronic headaches. It stimulates the heart muscles.
It is also used in cosmetics because of its toning effect.
Szegfűszeg
Until the 18th century, anyone who tried to smuggle cloves out of the Maluku Islands, their homeland, was punished by death. It has an intense fragrance and flavour thanks to its essential oil content. Its active ingredients are considered to be a natural antibiotic and antiviral. Its tea is used as a worm repellent and its oil is applied to the skin as a mosquito repellent.
For toothaches, chewing two grains can help reduce inflammation and pain.
It helps digestion and prevents the development of bloating. The spice not only aids digestion, but can also prevent diarrhoea and nausea. It is also used as an ingredient in a variety of expectorants and antispasmodic creams, and is often used to help people quit alcohol and smoking.
