Latest research on the diagnosis of endometriosis without surgery

Today I want to share with you a very recent research result from January 2013. The aim of the study was to measure the levels of two markers of oxidative stress in women with endometriosis.
110 women with endometriosis confirmed by laparoscopy and histology were included in the study, and 119 women with simple ovarian cysts were selected as controls. The levels of the markers tested were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, a complicated procedure, you do not need to understand the article to understand what it is. The point is that a sample of the women's peritoneal (abdominal) fluid was taken and analysed.
The result was that the levels of the markers tested were significantly elevated in women with endometriosis, and the degree of elevation correlated well with the severity of the disease.
In other words, the more oxidative stress markers in the fluid, the more severe the endometriosis.
In conclusion, they found that the disease generates higher oxidative stress and thus more frequent DNA damage in the peritoneal fluid, with the highest levels in the abdominal cavity of patients with advanced disease.
Why is this important?
The diagnosis of endometriosis without surgery is still in its infancy.
Samples of the abdominal fluid were taken to see if the woman had endometriosis and, if so, to find out how severe it was. After further tests with a higher number of elements, patients can receive a new, less burdensome and inconvenient diagnosis of endometriosis, which is possible without surgery, or can be ruled out without unnecessary intervention.
