It is now safe to say that the coronavirus has not been contained, and outbreaks have been reported in the immediate vicinity of our small country, such as Croatia and Austria. It is highly unlikely that our country will escape the virus, and in fact it is probably already here. Many Hungarians are now starting to worry and, fearing a possible quarantine, are rushing to supermarkets for long-life food.
There is no need to panic, I often tell my patients and I try to convey this message on the blog that the coronavirus is comparable to a more serious flu. Although it is very contagious, fortunately so far it seems to be sparing children or has a very mild course in them. The people most at risk are expectant mothers, people with chronic and autoimmune diseases, the elderly, those undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy, recent surgery and those on immunosuppressive (immune-suppressing) treatment.
What you can do to prevent:
- if you can, postpone your trip
- wash your hands thoroughly with warm water often
- have hand sanitiser with you
- don't go to a community when you are sick, have a cold, cough or feel unwell
- cough into the crook of your elbow or under your shirt collar, not into your palm
- if you are sick, wear a mask, otherwise it is unnecessary
- strengthen your immune system, eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, take higher doses of vitamin C
- if you have any of the conditions that put you at increased risk, avoid crowds and events now
- when you get home wash your hands, face, change your clothes
- follow the posts of normal, credible news sites
- vaporise antiviral, air purifying, immune boosting essential oils in your home and workplace
- clean more often, wipe and disinfect the handles every day
- aim for a healthy lifestyle, do light exercise even at home every day, get enough sleep, drink plenty of fluids
- take care of yourself and everyone else
Many people laugh at the people who have gone out to do some bulk shopping for a possible quarantine. It's not worth bothering about that, because the loudest mockers are in the supermarkets, taking selfies with empty shelves...:-D Almost everyone is doing it now, whether they admit it or not, somehow it's very much part of our Hungarian national collective unconscious. Even before a long weekend, the shops are much busier, let alone in the shadow of a pandemic, spoken or unspoken. Be tolerant let everyone deal with this situation in their own way. How about, instead of scoffing, we ask the old lady if we can help carry the bags to her minivan?
Whether shopping makes sense or not, it doesn't matter from here on in, the important thing is the feeling that the knowledge of food in the cupboard or pantry gives us: a sense of control, that we have the reins, that we have done something, and that we can feel more secure about ourselves and our loved ones. Some people do it this way, some run after masks, some are more driven by their work, some are in complete denial and seemingly don't care about anything. Everyone does it differently. 🙂
Here's how to do it if you want to prepare food for a possible quarantine.
Do it smart!
First, look around your home before you go shopping. Many of us have a ready-made pantry at home without any crown-virus paraphernalia. Throw out what's out of date, bring forward what's about to expire, and put any non-perishable foodstuffs a little further back. Think about what you can make from the food you already have, and how much. Are you sure you need more stuff? If so, which foods are missing just one or two ingredients? Get them.
You also need to think about how much you stick to your endometriosis diet during a possible quarantine. After all, most people take home cartons of white flour, sugar, refined, processed, pre-packaged foods, tinned food, chocolates, crisps - the first to go from shops.
If you're on an endometriosis diet or a vegan diet, check out my list below to choose from if you're looking for something to add to your already stock at home. Buy in reasonable quantities, as much as you can expect to eat, even if there is no quarantine.

In addition to the food, you should also think about the basic homeopathy, which is also good without quarantine:
- antipyretics and painkillers
- nasal spray
- Vitamin C, Vitamin D
- grapefruit seed drops
- intestinal disinfectant, tummy-trap
- bandages and plasters
- throat disinfectant tablets
- if you have children, have a child's version of everything and cough syrup at home
- make sure you have enough of your regular medication if you take it
- Betadine or disinfectant spray
- cola (I use it for stomach infections)
- bottled table cranberry juice, bottled cranberry juice or cranberry juice straight
- Swedish Drop
In addition, basic hygiene and cleaning products are also important, and you should have toilet paper, tissues, toothpaste, detergent, dishwashing liquid, antiseptic hand wash, soap, antiseptic mopping liquid, tea tree oil and vinegar.
Buy only what you will consume sooner or later, even if there are no quarantines and curfews! Don't throw out food or medicine! Remember, there's no zombie attack coming, no apocalypse coming, just a virus from which far more people are cured than not!
